Author, Naturalist and Educator: John Bates

July 22 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

John Bates

The Boulder Junction Public Library presents local author, naturalist and educator, John Bates, on Thursday, July 22, 7 pm, at the Boulder Junction Community Center. John will be discussing “Wisconsin’s Wild Lakes: A Guide to Our Last Undeveloped, Natural Lakes”.

Of Wisconsin’s over 15,000 lakes, very few wild lakes remain. These are rare places where remarkable peace and beauty abounds, and where native wildlife flourishes. Over the last four years, John Bates has paddled or visited nearly all of these remaining wild lakes (137!), many of which are in Vilas and Oneida counties. John will describe in detail a number of these lakes and give an overview of their ecological and social values. This talk previews his book, Wisconsin’s Wild Lakes, which will be released in October.

John Bates is the author of nine books on the Northwoods and Upper Midwest, and a contributor to seven others. John has been featured on Wisconsin Public Television several times and has been a frequent guest on Wisconsin Public Radio. He has worked as a state forest naturalist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and owns Trails North, a naturalist guide service. He also conducts outdoor classes for the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, Nicolet College, the North Lakeland Discovery Center, and many others. For 31 years he has written a biweekly column, “A Northwoods Almanac,” for the Lakeland Times in Minocqua, Wisconsin

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For questions and further information, please call the library at 715-385-2050 or email [email protected]
