Summer Book Walk
June 15 - August 6
The Boulder Junction Public Library will be offering a Summer Book Walk starting now at the Boulder Junction Public Library Reading Garden and Boulder Junction Community Sports and Recreation Park, 5358 Park Street (Highway M), Boulder Junction.
A Book Walk is a fun, educational activity that places a children’s story (literally a book taken apart) along a popular walking route in a community. Conceived as a way to inspire parents, teachers, and caregivers to take young children out of doors for physical activity and to learn, a Book Walk helps build children’s interest in reading while encouraging healthy activity for both adults and children.
The library will have laminated 2-page spreads of the book mounted on stands starting at the Library Reading Garden, across the driveway to the path by the skate park and basketball courts, past the playground, then along the path around the baseball diamond. Directional arrows will point readers in the right direction.
The book the library has chosen for the Summer Book Walk is “Up North at the Cabin” written by Marsha Wilson Chall and illustrated by Steve Johnson. Chall offers readers a trip to the Northwoods through her carefully chosen words and Johnson’s lush paintings. A young girl anticipates her arrival at the beloved cabin, experiences nature’s wonders while there, and returns home with her fond memories until the next summer. Each segment of the child’s narrative prose poem is accompanied by wonderful, evocative, full-page oil paintings of the family enjoying the lake and the surrounding wood.
The magic of summer, the call of the north woods, and the exuberance of childhood imagination combine here to create a book that will be treasured long after the last autumn leaf has fallen.
