Fun with Census and Plat Maps

September 2 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Northern Waters Genealogical Society invites you to their next meeting on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, 6-7 pm, at the Boulder Junction Community Center, 5392 Park Street. A brief business meeting will follow. Guests may attend in person or join on Zoom.

This month’s program is “Fun with Census and Plat Maps” with guest speaker, John Von Haden Live via Zoom. This presentation will show ways in which using the census together with plat maps can help unlock some genealogical mysteries.

John Von Haden, a Hartford, Wisconsin native now residing in Menomonee Falls, caught the genealogy bug at a young age during a family vacation. His research began the “old fashioned way” before there was online research, indexed censuses, or DNA testing for genealogy. His passion for genealogy has only grown since that time.

While attending college at UW-Madison, John worked in the microforms room at the State Historical Society and was able to continue his quest to compare Census records to Plat maps, in order to research the families of Washington and surrounding counties. His techniques and meticulous methodology are applicable to any area in which one’s ancestors resided.

This presentation will describe how local land records may be used to link to our immigrant ancestors. For more information see his website: http://www.wisconsinancestors.com/.

This program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information or to request the Zoom link, please call 715-686-7339.
