May Art in the Library Exhibit
The Boulder Junction Public Library welcomes the public to view their May “Art in the Library” exhibit “Aquatica – Reflections on Wisconsin Lakes” featuring the works of student artists and professional art mentors who collaborated with scientists at the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Natural Resources Department, UW-Madison Trout Lake Station, and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Escanaba Lake Research Station. The artwork will be on display throughout the library during regular business hours.
In 2022, the Center for Limnology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Trout Lake Station received a grant for a project called “Drawing Water: Engaging Community through Art and Science in Northern Wisconsin.” The program was developed to build citizen understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of the lakes and freshwater systems that are so important to the quality of life in Wisconsin. Building on the existing Drawing Water art/science work at Trout Lake Station, this new project would focus on student mentoring.
Drawing Water originally began in 2013 as an artist in residence, sponsoring 21 artists to date, and has grown to include the mentoring of interns by professional artists and scientists. Several traveling exhibitions have been created under the title “Drawing Water,” this new exhibit, “Aquatica – Reflections on Wisconsin Lakes,” is the most recent collection of work featuring pieces by the students and professionals who were inspired by spending a summer fully immersed in art and science in the Northwoods..
The project is based at Trout Lake Station in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin. The overall goal is for the art and science work to build cognitive and cultural bridges that connect people, places, ideas, and communities from the Northwoods to the state capital.
There will also be an Artists’ Reception on Saturday, May 4 from 11am to 1pm. During the reception, guests will have a chance to talk to representatives of the Drawing Water project. Children’s art activities will also be offered. The reception is free and open to everyone, and refreshments will be served.
